Default Need Suggestions

My dad has an 04 Mach I. So far it has UPR X-pipe, Mac Mufflers, JLT intake, a tune and 4.10 gears for the go parts. Eventually my dad wants to go built with a blower, but that's in the future sometime. As for right now what are some other worthwhile mods? Are a set of headers an idea? I've read that the stock manifolds aren't really a bottleneck until he's making much more power. Personally I think he should go with a ported set of heads and cams as well as new rear axles, I've heard they are somewhat weak as well. I need some good suggestions guys! But not too many, can't have my dads mach faster than my L!

Manuel trans? If so a nice aftermarket shifter is always a good mod.

yep manual trans...already got him a pro 5.0. I just don't see as many advertisements for mods for the machs as say my L or the termi's. I'm thinking heads and cams would be the way to go.

As far as bolt ons go Headers aren't a bad choice.....I assume he has a hand held tuner. UDP's minus crank pulley might be a good idea. I'd say maybe a baby shot (75 or so) until he gets his blower. Also an electric water pump will give you a few HP. The axles aren't too bad. Depends on if you are doing a lot of drag racing or not. I've heard of people snapping rear axles with 4.30 gears and sticky tires on a 6k launch at the track. I've only had my car at the track a few times- lots of street "abuse" though and have had zero axle problems through almost 60k miles. If he's going with a blower a couple of things to think about are an upgraded clutch, flywheel and throwout bearing, I'd say 35 spline axles will handle all you can throw at it, get a wide band AF kit too. suspension you might want to think about a strut tower, panhard bar, and FLSFC's. Between the 5.0 and MGW I'd say go MGW- I've had both and I HATED the 5.0.

The Heads/Cams would be the last thing I'd do because they already flow extremely well (same heads as the 03/04 cobra)

Default Listen up!

Some people never pay attention (not you, just some people)

when you're new to a type of car it's best to do the research before you do anything to car. I'm not trying to bust anyones balls here, so don't take it the wrong way, however since I've had a 99 Cobra & two (2) 04 Mach1's I think I can safely say: There are some not so good ideas above (to say it nicely).

Headers- not even close to worth the time or money, until you can make at least 400 HP. They do sound sweet & atract lots of cops attention though. But unless sounding like you have 400 HP is worth $800+... Don't do it...

Underdrive Pulleys- 1 HP, really!?!? Never ever ever do these to your N/A modular motor... The cost of the repairs costs you more than the parts! Do Not Do This 1 HP gain modification!!!

Exhaust in general is a touchy subject for some people because they really believe one is better than another. Honestly, & this is from experience, the free flow "race style" mufflers (magnapacks, stingers, etc...) make more HP than the chambered ones. It's simple to understand, just try to look thru each of them. Haha. Now what mufflers you have should influence your midpipe selection. Keeping in mind that our N/A cars do need back pressure (contrary to popular belief). My personal opinion (because I've had both types of mufflers & pipes) if you do a race style muffler, go with a free flow catted midpipe. If you do a chambered muffler you can do either style midpipe, but power wise the freedom of the catless "should" make more power.

Nitrous- Do it if you like it. I did...

CAI- well, on the Mach 1 it's dependant on what you want, what you intend on doing, & what you want to keep functional or OEM styled.
I had a C&L, but tossed it because it just gets hot & defeats the purpose. JLT, over hyped & I tried it, but the long fenderwell kit makes a difference, however this then eliminates the use of the shaker. Personally, I pulled every wazoo CAI kit out & just went to the stock tubing & a nice big open filter. It worked the best IMO. The HP difference will be so slight it may not even register on a dyno. 1-2 HP at best. The flow bench isn't everything, Im talking from experience.

Shifter- I have personally had a Steeda Tri-Ax & an MGW. I have shifted a car with a Pro 5.0 & a Hurst. The MGW is hands down the BEST shifter on the market! It's the most solid feeling and smoothest shifter I have ever tried. All the others are junk in comparison! (I have a barely used one for sale btw)

I've forgotten at this point what some others have said, but here is what I would do to another Mach 1 if I had one:
MGW shifter, midpipe & muffler combo, gears, 31 spline axles, a brake upgrade, not in size, but in materials & braided lines. Aluminum driveshaft, Intake spacer (I have one of those also, I think) & HID lights so you can finally see at night. Tackle that weak mustang suspension too! Coil overs if you can, a K-member would save "some" weight, but not really much else. If you don't have the coin for coil overs, start researching springs and shocks combos. You have to choose what's most important to you, Launching or Handling or Show... I would have to write a whole other page on that topic...
Buy the right tires! Find tires that are geared toward your driving habits not what everyone else says. I found BFG's to be a great all around tire, & I like the Nitto Drag tires, but that's for me...

I'm starting to lose my focus so I'll stop there... The Mach 1 is a great great Ford motor car, but unfortunately too many people F them up because they want to turn it into something it's not. Just enjoy it! I wish I still had mine...
